Gospel/Jazz Convergence: Mahalia, Mingus, Miles with the Tyrone Birkett Group
A preview of this concept, an exploration of gospel and jazz and the lament, triumph and celebration common to both genres. The Tyrone Birkett Group re-interprets the work of gospel pioneer Mahalia Jackson, Jazz iconoclast Charles Mingus along with original selections in the spirit of these great artists. Sounds ranging from gospel shout, Coltraneish excursions, smooth ballads to electric jazz adventures.

Hi folks, I know you haven’t heard from me in a while. A lot of life has happened...
However for the minute I’d like your help. I need additional video footage of my gospel jazz group. So we have rented a small loft studio in Midtown to videotape us. We are asking an exclusive group of selected friends and supporters to come and enjoy the music while providing us with a live audience. We need about 20-25 people so let us know soon if you can make it. Here are the details;
Wed October 7th, 7pm – 8pm
Michiko Rehearsal Studios
Stage Room
149 West 46th Street (bet. 6th & 7th, closer to 7th)
212 302-4011

In Midtown so its close to all subways, Penn Station, Metro North and places to eat before or after the taping. It would be nice to meet some of you and catch up with others. And yes there is no admission J

The sounds of gospel, jazz and Christmas come together in this very special concert featuring singer Kim Burrell, who has been called "the gospel diva of the new millennium." Bringing together the power and passion of gospel and the feeling and technique of the great jazz vocalists, Burrell displays a divine musical synthesis.
